Matthew House Services

Matthew House is more than just a safe, clean shelter in Toronto.  It is "home" for the displaced and homeless who have traveled the refugee highway. Many residents liken the Matthew House community to a caring family.

The well-trained staff of Matthew House offer help and advice with immigration procedures, orientation to Canada, finding permanent accommodation and friendship. Currently, a trained music-therapist also offers her services to our residents on a twice-weekly basis.

Matthew House publishes a guide to living in Toronto called "Getting Started" for our residents (now translated into French and Spanish). It covers information on topics such as lawyers, legal aid, medical assistance and how to obtain medications, educational advice and support, job search information, and emergency phone numbers.  This booklet also advises refugees on very practical topics such as how to use the city transit system, banking information, useful English abbreviations, where to obtain free clothing and meals, accessing library resources and using community sports centres.

Our newly appointed Transition Worker helps those who need an extra hand in transitioning from Matthew House into the "bid world" by providing ongoing support as some refugees settle into the community.

The staff of Matthew House provide individualized support for both current and former residents and are equipped to assist with specific and unique circumstances.  Matthew House strives to be a bridge of hope between Canadians and newly-arrived refugees, and seeks to do this with professionalism, warmth, care, and friendship.
