Family reunification is “the right of non-nationals to enter into and reside in a country where their family members reside lawfully or of which they have the nationality in order to preserve the family unit” (IOM, 2019).

Canada’s options for family reunification are quite narrow and only include a spouse and children under the age of 19. It is not possible to bring children over 19, siblings, parents, or other family members through a family reunification program. The Canadian Council for Refugees continues to advocate for expedited reunification and hope that the current processing system that takes more than 3 years on average for dependents will transform to 6 months. Safe Third Country Agreement

Under the Safe Third Country Agreement, in effect since December 2004, Canada and the US each declare the other country safe for refugees and close the door on most refugee claimants at the US-Canada border. Join us in asking the government of Canada to secure refugee rights to life and liberty.

Refugees Welcome Here

Refugees Welcome Here! is a joint initiative of Amnesty International, the Canadian Council for Refugees and Amnesty International. The partners embarked on a public awareness campaign to:

  1. Encourage Canada to welcome more refugees

  2. Achieve more fairness in systems affecting refugees

  3. Foster more welcoming communities across Canada

  4. Rebut myths about refugees

  5. Emphasize the contributions of refugees
